CHAPTER 11

Amethyst

Each day, I work until lunch and then head to Brox’s side. The station feels extra warm today as I come out of my lab coat. I wasn’t beyond doing unthinkable things to bring my alien lover out of this stupor. He’d been asleep for a solid week with the prognosis that he was healing from the inside out. Only a line of nutrients kept him alive, his body hooked to devices so he could relieve himself unconsciously. At least, his body is working.

I pass the pen light over his eyes, and he twitches! It is a sign he was coming around. I sigh, the fatigue of the past week settling over me. Sitting hard, I reach for his hand and pull it to me. No one else is around; the med bay is clear except for him.

“Brox, honey, you have to wake up. Come on. I’m here. Please.” Suddenly, my body shudders as tears pour from my eyes. The thought of losing him becomes unbearable. Mother Jewel wouldn’t allow someone in a coma to lay here indefinitely, or even long enough to need rehab when they awakened. His time here is short if he doesn't show progress.

“Please, please wake up. I can’t stand this. Brox, I miss you.” My chest heaves. My heart would utterly break if Mother Jewel sent him away. I simply couldn’t fathom it.

Leaning forth, I kiss his unmoving lips. “Come on, love. Wake up for me.”

Footsteps coming into the room caused me to part quickly and sit back, my hand wiping the tears from my eyes.

“Amethyst, what are you doing here?” Mother Jewel walks in.

It takes everything I have not to spill my tears, cry into her arms, and admit the truth. She is concerned for me, her daughter, but I believe she’d use the situation to send Brox packing if she thought for a nanosecond we had anything going on.

“I feel responsible. I should have vetted him before sending him out onto the hull,” I say, trying to make it sound like I was the guilty party here.

“From what I’ve learned, he had done this before, hull mechanics, and it was just an accident. Dr. Urglok says you’re here every day and even putting off your clinical work. What’s going on, daughter?”

Of all people, I don’t need Mother Jewel here questioning me when I am feeling so fragile and ready to fall apart.

“I feel responsible for Brox. I didn’t vet him.” I turn to him to keep from tearing up.

“My daughter, I don’t believe it had to do with that. It was just an accident,” Mother Jewel says as she inches toward me.

I wipe my eyes; the damn tears want to fall anyway. “I realize this. But still. I took my guest liaison job seriously and made friends with those I welcomed. All the others are thriving, except for him.”

Mother Jewel peers at Brox. “Perhaps we should send him to the Trinity Star Rehab.”

“No!” My eyes widen, and I even jump at the outburst.
